What’s next for Ben Whittaker, after his 2-round demolition of opponent Liam Cameron? The result left questions to be answered.
Many, including myself, think that the stoppage was premature, and if Cameron was the A-side in this bout, he likely would have been given more leeway.
Whittaker had timed a perfectly-placed right cross as Cameron approached him, landing squarely on the jaw and snapping Cameron’s head to the right.
Cameron was rocked and Whittaker proceeded to unload a vicious onslaught, sending him to the ropes and buckling for a second time.
However, I think that Foster, the referee for this match, should have given Cameron a count when his legs buckled again, as he was kept up by the ropes.
If this had taken place in the centre of the ring, it is very likely that this would have resulted in a knockdown, so it’s left more to be desired.
What I can say from Whittaker’s performance against Cameron, is that he looked sharper, and clearly developed his approach for a tough opponent.
Cameron appeared to have the edge in the first fight, sadly, the premature stoppage prevented him from having a chance to recover and come back into the fight at a later stage.
Whittaker would have been the stronger fighter in the early rounds, and may have went on to stop Cameron at any point in the first half anyway, but it would have been great to see more.
Potential Next Opponents
In terms of who Whittaker can fight next, he is currently in the top 15 for the WBC, setting up fights with the likes of: Lyndon Arthur, Zach Parker, Willy Hutchinson, Lewis Edmondson, Ezra Taylor etc.
I believe that Whittaker can win these fights, and would like to see how his power stacks up as he moves up the levels, he hasn’t looked like a powerful puncher in most of his recent fights.
For now, elite opponents such as Beterbiev and Bivol are a long way off, I also would not pick Whittaker to beat Benavidez or Morrell. Beterbiev likely retires before Whittaker moves to the world level stage, if he does.
