Boxing Defence - Dos and Don'ts

Boxing Defence, what are the essentials, or things you need to work on to demonstrate the sweet science: Hit and not get hit, here are some do’s and don’ts:

Dos:

  • Get yourself in, and maintain stance
  • Keep the hands high, always ready to block, and parry shots, and counterpunch
  • Leave space through the guard to observe your opponent
  • Slip shots (slip outside of jabs and straight punches)
  • Duck, or roll under hooks
  • Pendulum steps, snap in-and-out of range
  • pivot around opponents, to setup offense, and negate opponent’s offense
  • move around the ring when you have to
  • setup your power shots
  • establish the jab and your range

Don’ts:

  • Overcommit with a punch
  • Keep hands low
  • Use incorrect breathing techniques (such as holding your breath)
  • Block your vision
  • Stay in the pocket after working a combination
  • Lunge in recklessly
  • Remain stationary
  • Get trapped on the corners and ropes
  • Neglect the jab
  • Fight at the wrong range
